Uniting with My Lost Roots, Meeting the Black Costa Ricans

Memories of my first trip to Costa Rica continue to come in bits. I regret that I didn’t do much at the time given that I had no idea of what to expect. After all, I was making my first foreign trip.

Are you telling me that there are black/African Costa Ricans?
Growing up in Southern California meant that my interactions with black people were limited. This is very different from New Jersey where I was born. Southern California tends to have fewer black people. It, therefore, came as a surprise to me to see many black/African Costa Ricans. I was similar to them in the sense that I was also black. But that is where our similarities ended. Unlike them, I was not fluent in Spanish. Not being able to speak Spanish to me was not good. My family is of Cuban and Caribbean background. [Read more...]

Science Competition For Students

How cool would it be to show off your idea for some innovative technology that could exist 20 years from now?

Well, students in grades K-12 now have that chance. Even as some worry we’ve fallen behind other countries in producing graduates in the critical STEM fields — science, technology, engineering and math — the 21st annual Toshiba ExploraVision science competition is back to inspire young people to help change the world.

“It’s especially gratifying how many past winners have said they learned to appreciate innovation, creativity and critical thinking,” says Masaaki Osumi, chairman and CEO of Toshiba America, Inc. Toshiba sponsors the event, which is administered by the National Science Teachers Association. [Read more...]

From Death Penalty to Taxes, California Ethnic Voters to Flex Ballot Muscle

Election Poll

New America Media, News Report, Zaineb Mohammed
SAN FRANCISCO—If California Gov. Jerry Brown’s tax-raising ballot measure, Proposition 30, passes Nov. 6, “a lot of it will be because of the ethnic voting population,” stated Mark DiCamillo, director of the Field Poll.

Data from the latest Field Poll shows that since 1990, over 90 percent of the increase in California’s voting population has come from the state’s ethnic voter community.

Multi-Language Poll

To better understand these demographic changes, a September Field Poll, conducted with the Institute of Governmental Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, surveyed approximately 1,200 registered voters in California in English, Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean and Vietnamese.

Pollsters gauged their views about propositions on the presidential election and November ballot measures on issues ranging from new taxes to the death penalty. The poll was funded partly by New America Media and the Blue Shield of California Foundation.

Proposition 30, backed by Gov. Brown, is one of two major tax initiatives on the ballot, and its proponents count ethnic voters among its biggest supporters. Each ethnic subgroup Field surveyed would affirm the initiative at a higher rate than the white, non-Hispanic voting population–49 percent of whom intend to vote “yes” on the measure.

The initiative would raise the state sales tax from 7.25 percent to 7.5 percent for four years, and would increase personal income tax rates on very-high-income Californians for seven years. California’s Legislative Analyst’s Office estimates that Proposition 30 would raise an average of $6 billion annually by California’s 2016-17 fiscal year. [Read more...]

Foot Care Tips for People With Diabetes

It's important for people with diabetes to be diligent about proper foot care to prevent the grave consequences from sores and infections.

Complications due to diabetes are the number-one cause of lower-leg amputations and account for nearly 86,000 amputations per year. Doctors estimate almost 50 percent of these amputations could have been prevented if the person had taken better care of their feet.

“I can’t emphasize enough how important it is for a person with diabetes to pay rigorous attention to their feet. Foot infections are the most common issue for a person with diabetes and are more severe and take longer to heal than in a person without diabetes,” says Dr. Alan Farber, a certified doctor of podiatric medicine.

It’s important for people with diabetes to be diligent about proper foot care to prevent the grave consequences from sores and infections.

Farber added, “Proper foot care is simple and includes things like using an antifungal daily, not only to heal, but also to prevent fungal infections, and using a moisturizer daily to heal and prevent dry, cracked skin.”

Are you being thorough enough in your foot care? Read on to find out:

Top 5 Indications A Grooming Problem Might Be A Medical Concern

Atlanta, GA (September 26, 2012) — Men’s typical grooming routines are quick and straightforward: a daily shower and shave, a comb through the hair, and a clipper to the nails when needed. However, according to Paul W. Wallace, M.D., a dermatologist specializing in ethnic skin care and the medical half of the Bump Patrol Smooth Crew, if a man notices a change to his nails, hair or skin, it should give him pause.

Dr. Wallace, who is an attending physician at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Medical Chairman of the National Psoriasis Foundation, recommends that men make a special visit to their dermatologist beyond the recommended annual skin exam if they notice any of these five skin, hair or nail issues: [Read more...]
